About Bilingual Babies Bebes Bilingues

Carolina is a native Spanish-speaking, Bilingual Speech-Language Pathologist who has worked with various bilingual populations. Due to their curiosity and the enjoyment of play-based learning, she enjoys working with toddlers and preschoolers the most. It is amazing to witness the development of language as children learn the meaning of vocabulary (receptive language) and then begin to use this to formulate their ideas (expressive language), expressing wants and needs, as well as commenting about the world around them. It is even more amazing to see this development occur in a bilingual environment. Read more about Carolina.

Luz is a native Spanish-speaking, Bilingual Early Childhood Special Educator. She has worked with a variety of bilingual special education populations in the preschool public school setting. She uses an English immersion model with her students. Read more about Luz.

Bilingual Babies is a play-based, Spanish immersion program developed to introduce early education concepts in Spanish. The Bilingual Babies program is based on the Rhode Island's Early Learning and Development Standards (RIELDS). Following the naturally developing language skills of infants, toddlers and preschoolers, Spanish language immersion is presented in a fun, exciting and hands-on manner. During our parent-child groups, having caregivers participate, allows for carryover of targeted vocabulary from week to week, while also introducing (or reinforcing) vocabulary that caregivers can use, with an emphasis on pronunciation. Weekly carryover sheets are distributed that highlight the class vocabulary and concepts. Our Pre-K - 3 program presents these same early concepts in a grade/age-appropriate way.

Luz and Carolina wanted to create a space where native and non-native familias could expose their children to the Spanish language and culture in a fun and interactive manner.

Research shows that the earlier a second language is introduced, the better chances there are to achieve native, or near native, proficiency. Although bilingualism is sometimes thought to cause language delays or confusion, the evidence states that there is no correlation. Furthermore, a true language delay or disorder would potentially be present across all languages the child is exposed to, regardless of the number of languages.

Some of the benefits of bilingualism include: improved cognitive processing,  improved metalinguistic awareness (awareness and control of a language's linguistic components; ability to think and discuss language) and improved executive function, in addition to preparing children to compete in a global market.
